    2010 Providence Bridge Pedal

The organizers have been generous enough to offer Portland Velo a registration discount, so for those of you who would also like to help out, here's your chance:

Providence Bridge Pedal needs Ride Marshalls!

Ride Marshall positions are on-course bicycle riding positions meant for assisting bicyclists in case of mechanical breakdown, to encourage safe riding, or to answer questions regarding the event. They are to be of general assistance and support to the riders as well as offer safety instruction when necessary to ensure a safe ride for all participants. Ride Marshalls are asked to carry a pump, bike tool, patch kits and tubes. Marshalls should know basic bicycle maintenance such as how to change a tire, replace a chain, etc. They will be given route instruction and general overview of the event. Marshalls will be assigned a route and time of departure. Ride Marshall positions/volunteers are managed by Ride Marshal Captains who offer training, instruction and support.

10-Bridge Start | Meet up at 5:45 AM @ Red Cross Parking Lot, N. Williams and N. Cook
5- Bridge Start | Meet up at 8:00 AM @ SW Naito and SW Morrison
If folks are interested in becoming Ride Marshals, please have them email Sarah Bailen Smith, sarah@bridgepedal.com. I’ll provide contact information and further instructions.

Oops, thanks Jim. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not perfect.

Jim, the discount expired July 23.

We’d like to offer you a $5.00 discount to the 15th annual Providence Bridge Pedal, Sunday, August 8.  Providence Bridge Pedal offers avid cyclists, casual riders, and little tykes spectacular views from atop two interstate bridges – the Marquam and Fremont bridges. This year riders get to ride I-405 too! For one day each year, cars take the back seat to bicycles as the City of Portland shows its two-pedal pride as one of the ‘Top Bicycling Cities in America,’ (Bicycling Magazine).

This discount is available for any bicycling route. Enter the discount code PBP216 in the appropriate box during the online registration process.   For all the details about this year's ride and to register click here.

Offer valid through Friday, July 23. This offer is only valid for individual Providence Bridge Pedal registrations.  It does not apply to Providence Bridge Stride.  This offer cannot be combined with any other discount.

     Hi Jim, Linda,

I just registered for the Bridge Pedal today (August 2nd), and thought "what the heck" and tried to discount code. It still works, and I recieved $5 off my registration.

Great!  Good to know.  (Helps to know the organizers!) It was great that they gave this deal to Portland Velo and last I heard, 35 people had taken advantage of the discount.  That plus the flyer in yesterday's Oregonian no doubt will result in record registration numbers.

I find it more fun to volunteer for the Bridge Pedal than to ride it.  I'm working on behalf of another club I help run (Mountain View Speedskating) and we have 2 crews doing cone placement on Macadam & McLoughlin.  My crew will be working to lay plywood on one lane of the Hawthorne Bridge for the ride.  So if anyone is extremely bored, feel free to come out & help on Saturday 8/7 from 6-9pm.  We remove the plywood on Sunday after the last rider has crossed, beginning at 11am.  Great fun and it earns much-needed cash for our club to be able to pay the rink for expensive ice time!

Yeah, I might try my hand at volunteering next year, depending on how crazy the ride is this year. My trick is to try and get there nice and early, so you can start up front ahead of all the slow, zig-zaggy riders. At some point though, there are going to just be TOO many people for it to be much fun as a rider.

LJ - Where do you plan on being during & after? After reading Kenji's email today stating BTA still needs Bridge Pedal help, I succumbed to volunteer as a ride marshall aka hall monitor. Let me know where you will be and if you want to meet somewhere after.

CJ - see my post above.  I am responsible for the Hawthorne Bridge so I will be there Saturday evening 6-9pm laying plywood.

Sunday I will be there at 7am until we take plywood off beginning at 11am.  Feel free to come by if you'd like to help - I am beginning to panic about the lack of response to emails I've sent my crew.  Or feel free to call my cell - 503.515.8128.
