Great job out there today Jeff....Awesome showing for your first 40k and you did it with no mechanicals :P As Jeff said, it was a great day for racing, the sun finally showed up :)
Most of the way out I was in the 28-30 mph range and at the turn around was averaging just under 29 mph...which either meant I was having a great day or it was going to be a tough return trip. As it turns out, I was having a good day and it was a tough return trip. Starting the day I knew I had Karsten Hagen 1 minute behind me so I was trying to hold him off as long as possible. Last year he was 2:34 faster than me so technically he should have caught me before the turnaround point.
At the turnaround point...no Karsten yet, but I could see him about 30 seconds back so I knew he was coming. The first 2-3 miles after the turnaround point I struggled having one of the guys I passed just before the turn pass me back...but at the same time it gave me somebody to pace off of for a little while until I pulled things back together. After a mile or so I was able to pass him again and put some distance on him. Then around mile 18.5 Karsten went around me, which again gave me somebody to pace off of and I was able to keep him within about 30 meters for a few miles until he finally opened up the gap.
In the end I crossed the line with an official time of 55:32 which was 8 seconds faster than last year on a harder day and finished 3rd on the day behind Karsten and Paul Bourcier. So now I have a full set of OBRA medals...Though I'd rather them all be Gold :P
For comparison sake I was about one minute closer to both Karsten and Paul compared to last years times, so I was about a minute faster than last year in the grand scheme of things.
I did cramp up again after crossing the finish line...seems to be a theme for me at the OBRA Championship ITT's.
To work things out, I went out for a nice (though rather windy) 30 mile ride with a little climbing to give me about 64 miles on the day and a good, hard hours effort thrown in for good measure :)
