    TT 40 K State Championships

Great sunny warm day for racing. Windy too. Got there a little late, got in a good warm-up and made it to the start without problems. I started out of the gate pretty fast and my HR shot up to 180 and stayed there for a while. I found my LT increases when I can warm-up and have a good ride the day before the TT. Seeing the 180 I knew I was doing my best. I passed several riders along the course. Got slowed up at the turnaround by passing a rider right then who took it pretty slow. Then the windy ride home. Speeds were ~4 mph lower on the way back and slightly depressing. Inhaled a bug at mile 18. Couldn't feel my hands by mile 20. Started to kick it up a little at mile 21 and had enough to go really hard with 1 k to go. Ended up with an official 55:22 for the day. I am happy with my time (really hoped to go under 55) but with the wind and looking at my HR data, it was the best I could do, but it wasn't quite good enough to win. I lost by 15 seconds. I am happy with 2nd. Looking at my HR I couldn't have gone any harder. Speedometer died at mile 14 for a little bit. Otherwise the huge variations in speed were because of the wind. Some sections had shelter/trees, others were wide open fields. Ron had a good run as well as Tom, Brian, and Greg. I got there too late to enjoy a warm-up under the tent, but thanks for bringing it. Few pictures/video of the finish linked below:

Great job out there today Jeff....Awesome showing for your first 40k and you did it with no mechanicals :P As Jeff said, it was a great day for racing, the sun finally showed up :)

Most of the way out I was in the 28-30 mph range and at the turn around was averaging just under 29 mph...which either meant I was having a great day or it was going to be a tough return trip. As it turns out, I was having a good day and it was a tough return trip. Starting the day I knew I had Karsten Hagen 1 minute behind me so I was trying to hold him off as long as possible. Last year he was 2:34 faster than me so technically he should have caught me before the turnaround point.

At the turnaround point...no Karsten yet, but I could see him about 30 seconds back so I knew he was coming. The first 2-3 miles after the turnaround point I struggled having one of the guys I passed just before the turn pass me back...but at the same time it gave me somebody to pace off of for a little while until I pulled things back together. After a mile or so I was able to pass him again and put some distance on him. Then around mile 18.5 Karsten went around me, which again gave me somebody to pace off of and I was able to keep him within about 30 meters for a few miles until he finally opened up the gap.

In the end I crossed the line with an official time of 55:32 which was 8 seconds faster than last year on a harder day and finished 3rd on the day behind Karsten and Paul Bourcier. So now I have a full set of OBRA medals...Though I'd rather them all be Gold :P

For comparison sake I was about one minute closer to both Karsten and Paul compared to last years times, so I was about a minute faster than last year in the grand scheme of things.

I did cramp up again after crossing the finish line...seems to be a theme for me at the OBRA Championship ITT's.

To work things out, I went out for a nice (though rather windy) 30 mile ride with a little climbing to give me about 64 miles on the day and a good, hard hours effort thrown in for good measure :)

Nice job Ron and Jeff!  Way to bring home more hardware.  Congrats to any other PV'ers who went round and round.

Great job guys!!Great to see you out there.

Wish I had similarly good news to report... But woke up tired, & never really had the mojo yesterday...had trouble hitting my power target and ended up 10w less than last week, 15 w under goal and HR 5-10 beats over expected. Suffered a lot on the way back after the turn, got dizzy & saw stars after the finish! Missed a medal by 22 sec in the 45-49 group.

The good news is, I'm actually very happy with my time given the wind conditions and being off kilter, 58:55 at 265w. I wonder if I could hit 57 with a better prep, a good night's sleep & a lucky shot...next year :-)

P.S. The best part of all is that for the first time this year, there was no need to hose out soggy muddy clothes, dry the tent and clean the bike at home. Saved me 2 hours!!

Looks like the "Official" results have been posted....and times have been adjusted down by 30 seconds, which I kind of thought would be the case because I didn't think I was 30 seconds off when I crossed the line. For those not in the know there was some timing issues that delayed the results due to somebody going off at the wrong time in one of the mens fields.

With that said I moved up from the 28th fastest time last year to the 12th fastest time this year (Jeff had the 11th fastest time on the day). Granted Zimbleman and Banks were not racing yesterday, but that's good improvement from last year.

Great job to those who raced. Unfortunately for myself and Quinn and several other, we misread our start times on the website. Probably a blessing in disguise, seeming how breathing at LT HR is painful due to being in a car accident and my ribs, neck and back are out of whack, but I was prepared to tough it out. Maybe next year...

Mitch, I got t-boned by some chick who ran a red downtown Portland. I'm relatively fine, but X-Rays showed some shifting in my cervical vertebrae. I got hit last Wednesday night. Not having the best luck this season. I'll be back out there.

Ya know, you aren't the only ones - I gotta say that the way the start times were posted relative to the event clock, changed on Friday, duplicated at least one number, sent people off at the wrong times, posted results, then re-calculated times, surprise! I'm no longer sure what really happened; was I supposed to be in the medals or not? I heard there was an even bigger goof-up in the juniors with some kids doing half the course and they simply doubled their times to get 1st & 2nd. Was this event really up to snuff for an OBRA championship? Granted it is hard to put on ANY event, but Murphy's Law was at work across the board on Sunday. Sent a longish email to the referee but there's not much to be done at this point...If we ever promote a time trial, let's not do it this way.

Good thing it was sunny and all for fun, if I was "serious" about this sport I'd be ticked right now. OK got that off my chest. Race more, b*&^%ch less :-)

Re: TT 40 K State Championships

    Tom,

I'm guessing they got the times worked out with the adjustments. When I crossed the line I thought I was right at 56 minutes since I start my watch 1 minute before I leave. So my "Official" 56:02 is right where I expected it to be and was a bit surprised by the first 55:32 that they posted time wise.

It does sound like there were some mistakes that took place, not much doubt about that...but all it takes is one in a Time Trial and it throws everything else off. If it happens early it can make a big difference on how bad the screw up was. In a road race one screw up generally doesn't throw everything else off, so you don't notice it as much there.

Overall...it was a nice day, good racing and for the most part a good race.

The only gripe I had on the day was parking. They were loading the e-mail list wanting more people to turn out, yet there was no where to park because they didn't get the "Open Field" they were talking about cleared off, thus limiting parking spaces. I ended up on the main road where you drive in from which has never happened before.
