    Jack Frost TT....

    What a beautiful day for a race....Three years in a row  :D

I was hoping to go a little faster today, but being too fat still and having a head/cross wind much of the way slowed down my time a little....but just shows, I still have some work to do. I was able to keep my HR up where I wanted it on the way out, but fell off a little on the way back....though I still felt good on the return trip.

I was hoping for a time in the 31 minute range, but ended up with an unofficial time of 32:45 (give or take a few seconds). I'm patiently awaiting the results to see where I finished, but I'm not expecting anything great finish wise at this time.

Overall though...a beautiful day for a race and a fun way to start the season.

Edit: One frustrating thing on the day....The start clock was 15 minutes or so late. I got there early and asked the officials whos watch they were going to use for the clock (it wasn't running yet), and the guy spoke up and gave me his time. My watch was 1 minute ahead of his so all was good. I started my warm up on time, packed the car up and headed to the start line. My start time was 10:30....and I had 10:23 on my watch at the time....their clock....10:06 !!!

So my warm up was fairly shot by the time my start time came up as I had to ride up and down the road getting colder for 15 minutes before I could start. Not sure what happened there, but to be 15 minutes off?

Yes, great day and venue for my first bike race. Warmed up enough by the time I started (11:30) so that I could leave the knee warmers behind. First time I've ridden with bare knees since October. :-) My main goal was to not charge out of the gate so hard that I'd blow up at the end, and my secondary goal was to break 40 minutes. My unofficial time was 38:45, and I kept the speed, cadence, and heart rate pretty consistent throughout, so I'm happy with the effort. I'm looking forward to Estacada now that I have one under the belt.

Thanks to Ron for leading the prep ride yesterday, as I'm sure that helped me a lot, and thanks to Malcolm Johnson for giving me a ride out and letting me use the trainer for warm-up.

    Re: Jack Frost TT....

Great weather today. Best ever (in my short memory) at JFTT. Felt OK, and I agree with Ron that the timing was a glitch as I didn't hear that they were behind until I was ready to go to the start. Otherwise, things went well as my fitness isn't great at this point but was able to tolerate a pretty high HR (for me) the whole time. Problems developed on the way back with auto traffic. A car pulled out from a parking lot about 2 miles from the finish and proceeded down the road at about 10 mph. As I was a bit hypoxic and running on adrenalin, it was a simple matter to just move into the other lane and pass him. I totally space the centerline rule. I continued along until I could see the final 90 degree left turn before the finish and saw that there were three cars going VERY slowly due to people on the roadside. They were crawling along, less than 5 mph and I was on them too fast and again pulled out to pass, when someone shouted out "CENTERLINE" and I realized then that I might be toast "officially". Slowed down, waited for the two that I'd passed to go by, then cruised along slowly to the finish. Don't know if I DQ'd yet. Oh well......

    Re: Jack Frost TT....

    Greg,

It sounds like there was some serious issues with traffic this year. My wife was near the finish area and several people nearly were ran over by cars because they had nobody monitoring the corner. She, as well as others suggested a flagger on the corner of some sort but OBRA said it would be too dangerous or something to that effect??? To dangerous when people are about to get run over, or in some instances going so slow they are interrupting the race.

In one instance, my wife saw one guy coming up on the corner. The car in front of him slowed "WAY" down, then sped up, then slowed "WAY" down again. The guy racing was PI$$ED!!! and started shouting some rather foul language at the driver...then my wife heard "DQ" coming from somebody official looking...so I'm guessing that guy was DQ'ed.

There was much, much more traffic this year than any year that I've raced at Jack Frost. Last year I think I saw 2 cars the entire way on the road....this year 10-15 at least, and most of them were not playing nice.

    Re: Jack Frost TT....

By the time I came through they did have an official monitoring that corner, and I was able to carry my speed through. KRhea was stationed a short distance past the finish taking photos, and he told me that corner was pretty much a complete clusterf**k early on. Fortunately, I didn't have any issues with auto traffic. The one issue I did have was a women racer drifting farther and farther left into my line on a straightaway as I was overtaking her. I pretty much had to ride the yellow line to get around her.

Probably not, that's about where I would have expected you to be  :D ..... Nice way to break in that new P3.

    My TT = Fail :(

    Re: Jack Frost TT....

All things considered, got my tt bike this week and rode it once (2.5 mi) prior to race, and my horrible winter training I was really happy. I figured the timing issue early enough to add some extra warmup time. I started pretty hard but was stoked since I caught my 30 second man after 1 min. I ended up passing5-7 riders. I held my heart rate to within 2 - 4 beats the whole race except for the turnaround and sprint. I made one mental mistake and almost turned left way early on the way out before I realized no flagger was there. I ended up close to 33 min +- 4 seconds unofficial. I think if my corsa disc had come in I could have saved a little time. That was my fastest tt to date so I am pretty happy.

I, on the other hand had no expectations :)  Used P2c btw (just new to me).

I lost the use of my speedometer right before the race, so I had no idea what mph I was doing.  I did have Time and Power still functioning.  Funny thing is I only ave'd @ 302w, which is pretty low (but ok considering the race effort the day before), so thumbs up for being aero!!!!

Results have been posted here: http://www.bbcbike.com/jf2010_results.html

I guess I can't call my race a "Total Fail" since I took 3rd out of 63 in the 40-49 group and had the 25th best time on the day (not including the fairing recumbents) which is better than last year. We had a few very nice placings at Jack Frost this year....Great job to all that went out and raced.

Wow, that recumbent winner clocked about 31.4 mph if I did my math right. Some of those rigs looked pretty aero! BTW, I thought "Ron Ron" was Ron Artest. :-). I also noticed that a couple of our guys received time penalties. Was it for crossing the centerline?

Yea...the recumbent guy has been around for a while and cranks out some fast TT times. It's pretty cramped in there, so much so he has to run 140mm cranks.

The time penalties are generally for drafting. Centerline violations are usually DQ's as are swearing violations.

Of course, drafting. That makes more sense. I guess it was Johnny Banks who Ron's wife saw swearing, as he was the only one DQ'd as far as I can see. I can't say I blame him though with that idiot driver in front of him.

    Re: Jack Frost TT....

I just wrote to the organizers about the time penalty, I ran a clean race, had no issues. I felt like I couldn't have gone faster - well, maybe resting or spinning Saturday :> Passed all the guys ahead of me but one, and no one passed me, Pinned HR at 2 beats under AT then went anaerobic for >15 minutes for hills, pursuits and passes.Chile Relleno for breakfast RULES! Great job all - looking forward to pics, Vic!
