The web page doesn't seem to be user friendly to new members. Would a redesign of the home page showing new articles or photos on a bi-monthy basis attach more veiwers? Maybe the old timers could trade off in write an articles of "Everything you wanted to know about cycling but were afraid to ask?" A new look to the home page showing new photos or cool graphics that would attach the attention of the reader right away. Just some thoughts.

The "waiver" agreement is the problem. Because it's more than a waiver. It's also an indemnity agreement.

If I have an accident and my health insurance company pays the bills, then my health insurer has a right called subrogation. My health insurer can sue anyone they want, in my name, to try to recover what they had to pay out. I have nothing to say about it. If they sue Portland Velo, then the indemnity clause makes me personally liable to the club's insurer to pay for the defense of that case for the club, plus any money they have to pay out.

I don't mind a real waiver, but the indemnity clause is unfair, and essentially means I am uninsured if my health insurer decides to sue the club. That's not right. Yes, I know it has been that way since the beginning. Years ago I signed one, and I just crossed out the indemnity language and no one said anything. That doesn't seem right either.

I suppose I should just forget it and let my membership lapse, but I don't like the idea.

Is the specific language about indemnity expressly required by the insurer? If so you might ask them to explain how that works when a health insurer files a subrogation claim. I don't think you will like their answer.

New Velocity Graphic Design

love it!

CPR AED class

Really practical class from a very experienced practioner and instructor. I don't need all of the pop-ups and clever stuff — plain HTML suits me fine.

After finding that no one (including the "leaders") had a map of the route in our group on Saturday, I wondered how easy it would have been to download the map from the web site. I counted 9 clicks:

2 clicks to login, then pull a menu and 1 click to go to the "rides and Events" calendar. 1 click to go to May, scroll and one click to go to the Saturday ride, click on "ride map", but that doesn't display the ride map, it displays a page to download the ride map, (one more click) which I then have to locate in the downloads window and open (double-click). It was actually worse than that, because first of all I clicked on directions, and only after I had been puzzling over the result, did I realize that this meant directions to Longbottom's, not directions for the ride.

Lynne tells me that she can do it all in two clicks, but that sort or underscores my point: it's all too complicated, and the easy routes are all hidden.

Feedback On the New Website

Hey guys-

The people are fantastic -- no doubt about that. But dang! I''ve never ridden with a group of people who just can''t seem to ride a consistant speed in a line! Sure, groups sprint, challenge each other -- all that jazz. But this was frustrating. One minute we were going ~24 mph, the next, ~15. And of couse no one said "slowing!"

I think I figured out what the problem is: everyone starts together. You have too much of a mix of fast and slow if you do that -- which, as I''m sure many of you are already thinking -- is a prime recipe for spills. They had one today soon after we started out -- and OF COURSE no one in the group around the incident communicated anything to the people behind the crash, so we came hairs away from having a massive pile-up! Fortunately the people immediately behind pulled off into the grass or the lane of traffic (good thing no one was hit!) -- then when I saw what was going on I yelled stopping so the people behind me wouldn''t run me over! I can''t believe I was the first person to say anything -- I was at least 8-10 people behind the person who went down.

The yo-yoing thing is driving me nuts. Because I''m working hard to keep up with the faster people, and because I don''t want to mess up someone else''s ride if I start to fall off the group, I try to stay toward the back of the "pack." In a normal group, you''re going to get a bit of yo-yoing in the back. But this is ridiculous!

And I say "pack" for a reason; you can''t really call it a line, because sometimes the pack will be three across, sometimes one, sometimes five. It''s hard to pick a line and stick with it, because no one in front of you is holding a line. They''re all over the f''ing place (pardon me). Then they challenge each other, so the cluster follows; I work super-hard to bridge the little gap that developed between when they started a sprint and when I realized what was going on, but the next thing I know I''m having to dodge wheels because they''re all wasted and slowing to a crawl -- and not keeping their lines. As soon as I''m back matching their pace, someone in the pack decides to crank again -- and I''m stuck trying to bridge that gap AGAIN! Just for five miles I''d love for them to keep a steady pace. Just five miles is all I ask.

And signal? FORGET IT! I watched the entire pack in front of me take a right turn yesterday without ONE PERSON signaling. Thank goodness it was a right turn rather than a left across traffic -- oh, but they don''t signal then, either. I realized something about our PV group at a particularly frustrating moment yesterday... We suddenly started slowing; no one communicated that we were slowing, and no one signaled a turn. I asked what way we were turning. The guy behind me told me we were going straight. Well, no wonder no one signaled. BUT... in our PV group, I''ve come to understand that if no one signals, we''re going straight. It was that moment when I realized the reason I didn''t know we were going straight is because no one signals for turns in these groups, so people who don''t know the route (and cars behind the riders) don''t know what they''re doing!

My whole point is that I dearly miss riding with you guys. I feel safe with our group, and I feel that we are good representatives of the cycling community. Keep it up... I''m proud to be a member of Portland Velo.

I was musing to myself on the way to the ride last Saturday morning that, now that I was actually able to post to the forum, that I needed to send a thank you note.

Oh how I wish I could be writing the note I had planned to send.

It going to be about what Portland Velo meant to me. How much fun I’d been having. It was about having a group of friends to ride with where I really felt like I fit in. Where I didn’t have to be a race team member or ride with the Hammer’n’Nails group to feel welcome. It was about having great rides and friends to drink coffee with afterward.

I still need to say thank you. This has been an incredibly difficult week for all of us. Thank you, everyone, for your help. Not just for me, but for Tim’s family and all the rest who have been so affected by this terrible event.

And anyone who went to the part knows why within one year we have become the best cycling club in Oregon. There are a lot of great people in this club who give alot of there time. So lets make this year even greater.

What Do You Think of the New Web Site?

You''re probably thinking "didn''t we just put up the web site?". And you would be correct. Except that I never intended the "old" site to be permanent. This is more what I had in mind when I was thinking through the initial designs for PortlandVelo.net. It''s just that my day job keeps getting in the way of my fun!

Anyway, I''d love to get your feedback on the site - things you like and things you think I could improve on. I already have some ideas, but would love to hear from you.

Thanks for your support!

I''d like to give you all my personal kudos for the the enthusiasm and good humor you are all bringing to the club ride after ride, week after week. I really appreciate how everyone has been good about introducing themselves and making new members feel welcome. After only two months, we have close to 200 members. And you guys are the reason we are picking up steam!

Have fun and be safe! :D
