Good March. A great month. Along with May, July, and October it has an “ides”. Every month gets a “nones” or a “calends”. Only a select few get an “ides”. None of which will make us better or happier cyclists.
For March I have a few thoughts about group rides: If for some reason you are finding yourself slipping onto or maybe off the back of the group, try moving
to the front at every stop-light or delay. If the group is frisky the other riders are likely as tired as you are and willing to take advantage of your stint in the lead to take a break, slowing the average pace for a time and allowing you to get a rest at the front. If the group doesn't slow down it will take them a while to work past you and you still get a rest. This tactic also works for non-climbers. If you push the pace to the bottom of a climb the rest of the pack will take a while to pass you and may even decide to take a rest while you set a pace that works for you. In either case you get to spend more time in your comfort zone.
Thanks to good weather, last month's rides have been well attended and fun for all. Starting in March, the Wednesday ride will begin at 9:30 instead of 10. We will be moving the start to 9 in April. I would kind of like to go longer and went so far as to suggest a century out to the old Trojan nuclear plant and back. Doug is unconvinced and the format is liable to remain unchanged.
We would like to thank you all and particularly KRhea for the kind things said about the shop and us at the dinner on Saturday. It was fun spending time with you all, we look forward to more rides and more fun. See you on Friday at Rep Nite.
